Fred Gilly
Fred was crouched behind an enormous boulder somewhere in the NiemandsZone. He was the substitute for Delcour, who had been shot by a Tacbot a few days ago. He knew Delcour from way back at the academy where they had studied together. Not really into killing and fighting they still wanted to contribute to the Ariadnan cause, thus they decided for a career as a Dozer. He threw a careful glance over the boulder and there it had to be. His gloomy thoughts were immediately exchanged for an engineers curiosity. What will he find behind that thick curtain of seemingly impenetrable jungle? The Nomads said that this would be the exact spot where to retrieve the final piece of alien data. The triangulation had exactly pointed at this location.
Fred turned his head to the right and watched Da Geek working his console, looking up, a mixture of tension and the same curiosity written all over his face, looking over the boulder to the spot where IT had to be, and again working his console. Fred liked Da Geek. Nobody else did, but they were partners in crime when it came to all things tech and alien. They were waiting for de Lange, the new lieutenant, to give the command to proceed to IT, but de Lange was still on the comm, busy with… well whatever it was. Poor Masson, Fred thought, she had been a looker, now she was as dead as Delcour was.

Suddenly de Lange all agitated jumped up and screamed, “Kuang Shi are coming in from the hills behind the boulder. Take them out before they get too close!” “Well, well”, Fred thought, “seems like de Lange had some Nomad surveillance at his disposal”. Bercier was one of the new Metrós, standing at the far end of the boulder Fred was hiding behind. Bisbois had climbed the thing to better cover the hills behind it. “I see them!”, Bisbois yelled opening fire with his HMG. “Damn it! I missed! Can´t see them any more. Bercier, they´ll probably come around your side of the boulder.” he added. Fred didn´t like that. They were all lined prettily behind that boulder. If someone would… “Shit!”, Fred spat out as he saw the Kuang Shi appearing at the far end of the boulder, only a few meters away from Bercier. The shotgun blast punshed all the air out of his lungs and while he was mid-air waiting for his body to hit the ground, he knew his combat group was lost, the mission probably as well… then he hit the ground and tried to use the momentum to roll behind the edge of his death trap boulder. The Kuang Shi took no notice of him and began climbing the boulder as he had wiped out de Lange, Florine, Bercier and Da Geek with a single shot of his shotgun. He heard Bisbois firing his Pistol from above and then an extended scream. Bisbois landed with a “thud” right next to him, still grabbing the blade of the sword that had impaled him. Fred began to back away from the boulder intending to join the other combat group behind another small hill to the west. He slowly walked backwards, still facing the boulder when he saw the Kuang Shi looking down on him. Fred shot him straight in the head and he went out in a big explosion. He turned to run, only to hear the distinctive “cling” of a Chain Rifle going off. Again he was flying through the air, this time thinking, “thats it”, and it was, as another Kuang Shi came close to finish him off with his knife.

Masson watched Rodes cover her right, peaking around the corner of a pile of rocks marking the beginning of what was a small hill. On her left was a thick patch of jungle. Not that the jungle wasn´t thick where she was standing now. Not that this entire planet couldn´t be called infested and polluted by plants. So here she was again, in a different patch of the Niemandszone, still running after some alien tech. After Da Geek had analyzed the data acquired from the previous mission it became apparent that there were even more alien techno-devices hidden in the area she had now set foot into. He was really excited about all this, to her the whole thing seemed strangely staged. The data indicated that there were five devices of which four were valuable for the mission. They had to be activated one after another in a certain sequence… well it really seemed oddly staged. But that wasn´t her problem. She´ll let Da Geek handle this stuff. What she was here for was to handle once again Yu Jing forces roaming the area, also running after those alien devices. ‘Let them’, she thought, ‘I´ll make sure they´ll be shot in the process.’

This mission was probably going to be tougher than the last one. The Nomads had found out that PanO had also gotten wind of the devices and were already on their way to have a look themselves. She wanted to be gone by the time they arrived. Time was thus of the essence.

‘Delcour’, she whispered into her comm device, ‘proceed for triangulation device alpha’. Delcour, the units engineer, had been briefed by Da Geek and would perform the triangulation, starting on the right flank. Da Geek himself was off for some other mission this time around. Their allies, the Nomads, hadn´t felt the need to explain themselves. She didn´t mind, she didn´t like him anyway. ‘Bisbois you cover him’, she added, ‘fill the jungle with lead, let´s see if some Jings are lurking further ahead.’ Accompanied by the comforting sound of an HMG deforresting the area Delcour advanced to the first alien device and began working on it. A scream up ahead indicated that Bisbois had actually hit something somewhere in the jungle. So the Jings were already there. ‘Seems like we´ve got company’, she stated the obvious.

Then she heard it. At first she thought it would be some of those strange birds living in the trees but there was an odd artificial bytone to it. The sound grew louder, more threatening and then she figured what it was. ‘Merde!’, that being french for ‘shit’, and then, ‘I’ve got AD troops coming down right next to my position!’ Next she heard the unmistakable ‘thud’ of an AD troop hitting the ground to her left. She peered into the thick jungle but couldn’t see a damn thing. ‘de Lange do you…’, but she was interrupted by de Lange who was positioned to her left flank but a bit further ahead. De Lange, as always all coolness went, ‘got visual on a Tacbot, opening fire’. Then she saw the damn thing, the problem being, the damn thing saw her, too. ‘ALEPH?’, went through her mind along with a bullet to her gut. She hit the floor, holding her stomach. This was going to be a rough ride to the other side. She heard Rodes screaming, ‘Lt Masson is down! I repeat, Lt Masson is down!’ Abel chimed in, ‘de Lange got the Tacbot, but there is another Tacbot flying in. It shot de Lange! I’ll try to get closer, it hasn’t discovered me yet.’ She heard HMG-Fire but it wasn’t one of theirs. It sounded like ALEPH, ‘must be the Tacbot’, she thought. Slowly she tried to roll on here side to see what Rodes was doing. He was crouched right next to her, wide eyed and obviously scared. He quickly glanced at her but didn’t seem to stomach the blood flowing out of the hole in her belly.

There were more screams in the thick of the jungle. ‘Someone must take care of that Tacbot, and soon’, she thought. Again she heard Abel over the comm, ‘I’m closing in, I think I’ll get a good shot at it’, he said while the Tacbot waltzed through the jungle guns blazing. She heard Abel opening fire, but he did not cope with the return fire. The Tacbot went on, shot Delcour to bloody pulp. Manseau went next, then there was only silence. She looked over to Rodes and saw that his fear had turned to full-blown panic. ‘Where is it!? Where is it!?’, he screamed and then it came, breaking through the thick foliage on their left flank. She was too weak by now to roll over again, thus watched Rodes run like a rabbit followed by hundreds of bullets. The thing almost ran past her, but then it suddenly stopped. Lying on the ground she watched its servo-powered heels turn around slowly. It took two long steps toward her, bowing down. She felt the cool touch of a metallic hand, a sharp pain as the electric current began to flow, then nothing.

Francis Bellanger took over command. Rodes had been shot by the Tacbot soon after Masson died, but then the Tacbot went into the crossfire of the Garous ending its rampage. The Garous and Bisbois managed to prevent the incoming squad of Celestial Guards reaching the objective until PanO-Troops made an appearance and it was time to go.

Hugo Dupont
Well he was used to rough terrain, but this was ridiculous. At times the jungle was so thick Hugo was barely able to see his own feet while plowing through the lush green. It was also hot as hell in this green sweat incubator, hot like his lieutenant. Her name was Véronique Masson, a tall blonde Métro, stunning looks and stunning leadership skills, the kind of lieutenant who cares for her contingent but doesn´t loose sight of the mission objectives to fulfill. He was contemplating the perfect shape of her athletic body when suddenly her voice filled his head out of nowhere. “Dupont, you there?”.
He cringed as if she might have read his thoughts, before remembering the small electronic device stuffed in his ear. “I´m almost at the rendezvous point”, he replied stepping out of a particularly dense part of jungle, giving him a clear view of a small hill up ahead. He glanced about the place he was very likely to die within the next minutes as adrenalin began pumping through his system. “Go for it”, Masson said accompanied by small bursts of gunfire and screams somewhere ahead in the thickness of Pradiso green. He checked his HMG one last time and went for the hill.

Intelligence provided by the Nomad Nation indicated that Yu Jing had discovered some alien devices deep in the middle of the Niemandszone. The objective was to get hold of the information hidden in one of these devices and upload it to a Nomad Ship waiting in orbit. Naturally Masson hadn´t given a flying fart, they were Ariadnans after all, so the plan was to kick Yu Jing butt hard and fast before they could check the alien artifacts. Then they would have one of those Nomad geeks have a look at those alien things, the emphasis still lying on kicking Yu Jing butt of course.

The screaming and shooting was just a distraction to give Hugo the edge as he was reaching the hill and following it at its foot. “Contact! Wu Míng!”, he screamed, opening fire at the poor guy he´d just spotted between patches of green. Using the foot of the hill for cover he closed in on the Wu Míng already hugging the floor in an attempt to escape the stream of lead covering the area. Hugo ran past the downed Wu Míng finishing him off with one last burst, reaching another outcrop of the hill. He peered round the hill and spotted a whole squad of Celestial Guards in various states of confusion along with a Yudbot. Again he let his HMG do the talking. He wasn´t a good shot, but that wasn´t necessary. His HMG made up for that in number of bullets and also fortuna smiled at him. Two Celestial Guards fell to the onslaught of bullets, but that wasn´t all. Somehow one of the stray bullets flying round found its way into a squad of Kuang Shi, hidden further in the thick jungle, the skull of one of those poor bastards, to be more precise. Well, Kuang Shis have the bad habit of exploding on their demise, so almost the whole squad was wiped out in an instant. As Hugo in awe watched the bits of Jungle and Kuang Shi flying about, he realized that would be the split second of distraction that would cost him his life. The remaining Celestial Guards opened fire at him. An excruciating pain in his knee exploded and he found himself face down, lying in the mud. He lifted his head trying to focus the incoming Celestial Guards. “Dupont checking out”, he said forcing a smile, right before the Guard knifed him. Meanwhile his comrade Brisbois had deforrested the whole area with gazillions of bullets, felling the enemy Hsien commander in the process. The Yu Jing were running for their lives. Now it was time to bring in the Nomad geek for those alien artifact thingies…

3 Challenges of Listening to the D6G

24 Apr

I recently started to listen to the D6G, mostly while painting minis. I reached episode twentysomething and mostly enjoy it. Ok, it´s at least not too horrible…

There have been things – there is no hate in “NERDUMLUDENS” – that, well, were a bit of a disappointment. Further references to the shows wording intentional.

  1. Every other episode there is some guy having spend some time in the army being interviewed. And like those teddy bears for kid, with the string near the private parts, where you can pull and cause some tunes to play, Craig goes “Thank you for your service”. What is it with the d6g and the military? Thank you for what? Keeping the oil flowing? Keeping the immanent threat of the close by mexicans or Canadians at bay? Defending the US standard of living? I don´t get it.
  2. Sometimes their fanboyism gets a little irritating. For example while Matt Wilson served as an interviewee you got the feeling his behind must be getting crowded along the course of the interview.
  3. Finally – as I think Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition and RobboRally are among the best games I know – I am again a little sad. Their criticism of TI3 is of course a little vague, might come with the format, singing and all, but to say RobboRally doesn´t scale well… I don´t know, this is just wrong. The more people, the better it gets!

Now all that might sound a little harsh, but please don´t take me too seriously. You can really feel the huge effort that´s put in the show. Also the hosts themselves cover all aspects of the matter.

Craig: The artsy guy and word juggler

Russ: The game mechanic maniac that makes everybodys game collection scale… up of course

Raef: The slightly distracted man for the off-topic

Love what you do guys! Working my way up the next 100ish episodes!

Army Infinity from Devil Team Beta 4 is live?

19 Apr

A´right! Seems like the new army builder ist live.

Judging by the link its in beta 4. Not even sure if the link was supposed to get out…
Here it is:
http://www.infinitythegame.com/dt_army/_b4/army4.php

Needs some bugs to be fixed but other than that: awesome!

Edit:
The beta link is gone. So it´s official now and can be found here:
http://infinitythegame.com/army/

Still some glitches in it, the best version being the one in castellano, which makes sense if you look at where the developers come from. In the english forums there is little love from the community, which I think is really sad.

Micro Art Studio Guard House

1 Mar

Added the MAS Guard House to my MDF collection. I have to say… I love it!

Price
To me all the MDF-Stuff seems a little overpriced. After all, without any knowledge of the production process, one could think after you figured out how to cut it – i.e. made some kind of template – you can go mass production with relatively cheap material and some wear and tear on a laser. But what do I know of these things… nothing. What I do know though is, that for MDF Buildings in general, this is good value for your money.

Playability
You can detach the roof. You have ladders to get to the roof. You can stack them, but you get an additional floor/roof so you can use them as seperate entities. You have nice spare parts which you can use to create additional barricade-type shapes. You have doors and windows you can push out. I pushed/cut them all out and then put them back in – they don´t fall out that easily. This is great as you can play open/close window/door, which is nice. The only thing I don´t like that much is the way you remove the roof. It gets a little fiddely when you have minis on the roof and within the building as you only have some small handles to grab and remove it.

Durability
The stuff is quite durable. As assembly even works without glue you have a lot of sticking together going on. Sometimes quite an amount of pressure is involved which can lead to breaking things, but normally that won´t happen and is easily fixed with some white glue.

Looks
It looks great! Even without any painting. So I didn´t do any so far. But I´ve seen people getting really good results with the most basic spray-primer… like levitas here.

Extensability
You could combine them with District 5 and District 5L, but I don´t really see the point. It makes accessability of the interiors more complicated and leaving them alone you can cover more space on your table. Maybe this becomes more interesting if you add catwalks and stuff. We´ll see.

Assembly
I´ve seen reviews where people say the cut parts basically fall out – well that´s not what I experienced. There was some serious cutting going on in my case. I broke one of my exacto knives and nearly cut myself in the process. There are many parts to cut out and it can get a little tedious, but it´s still worth it and once you get the hang of it it goes rather fast. The manual is not very detailed but you can figure out assembly quite quickly.

All in all a great product! I´ll post some pics of it asap.

Micro Art Studio Infinity Tokens

19 Feb

Lately bought the MAS Infinity tokens, yeah those pricey thingies, 0.90 € a piece under acrylic glass. Well what can I say, Infinity is also very much about aesthetics, so I thought it would be a good investment – well it is not. The quality of the print is a slap in the face. I could do better with my old Canon S450 Ink printer. It was quite a shock to be honest how bad they were.

Other then being a crappy product by itself it would have been nice to print both sides of the token, so you don´t have to flip them around all the time. But that is probably a cost decision I can concur with.

Update:
It seems that MAS don´t print the tokens themselves and their supplier dropped print quality without them knowing. They´re now trying to minimize damage and are even willing to ship me a new set of tokens. I´ll post a fresh picture of those when they hit my maibox.

Update on update:
It´s not that I recieved those new markers weeks ago. It´s just that I´m too lazy/busy to post the new pics. I´ll get to this asap.
